Finca 6 de Agosto is a small coffee farm owned by Jessica Villasante. The land originally belonged to the grandparents of Jessica, whose family, like many Aymara families from the altiplano region near Lake Titicaca, migrated to the jungle due to limited land availability in the highlands. In their home communities, access to arable land has become increasingly scarce, leading many to settle in forested areas of Puno and begin farming coffee.

The farm had been left mostly unused for some time, with only a few remaining coffee plants. In recent years, the family decided to reestablish it as a coffee farm, encouraged in part by the recognition Alto Arcopunco has received in national quality competitions. A neighbor from the area won a national contest two years ago, demonstrating the potential of the region.

Jessica’s father currently manages the farm, with support from family members who are helping to expand and improve production. The goal is to gradually introduce new varieties such as Sidra and Geisha, while improving processing practices and infrastructure.

One motivation for restarting the farm was to move away from reliance on coca cultivation, which had previously been a source of income for the family. Although coca farming is common in some areas due to economic necessity, it comes with risks and instability. Coffee is seen as a more sustainable and long-term alternative.

The family is still in the early stages of this transition and is exploring how to make coffee a viable path forward. Field visits are planned to map the farm’s altitude and coordinates more precisely and to begin preparing for the upcoming harvest season.
