"Angel Ortega is a second generation coffee producer, succeeding his father and brother. "

- Angel Ortega

Summary of producer

Angel Ortega

Angel has been growing coffee since he was a teenager. As a young man he worked with his father and brother Augusto Ortega, initially managing a small plot of 700 vines, before going independent in 1985, at the age of 24, and planting 10,000 trees of Colombian varieties.

Today, San Agustin is famous for its coffee, with about 6,000 coffee producers in the region, but when Angel established his farm in the 1980s, the soil in the Kennedy area was very dry and not suitable for growing coffee. Every summer, heavy rains would wash away soil from the farms and cover the roads.

Still, those who are able to successfully grow coffee, like the Ortega brothers, enjoy benefits that are different from those today.

For example, in the 1980s, no one used chemicals on their coffee in this region because there was no need for fertilizer to make the crop grow optimally.

However, today, with the trend towards single-origin vines and an increase in weather-related diseases (such as La Roya leaf rust), growers must fertilize three to four times a year and carry out disease control treatments at least once a year.

Forty years ago, coffee cultivation culture was still in its infancy, so Angel initially sold a type of coffee called "en verde," which was pulped but not dried.

There were few local businesses that would buy parchment-dried coffee, and the fees to enter the market as such were quite high.

Nonetheless, Ángel (like many of his generation) is nostalgic for the past, when the cost of living was much lower and production costs were lower, making growing coffee and selling Enverde a much more profitable business than it is today.

Summary of variety

Gesha

The Geisha (or Gesha) cultivar is a highly prized variety of Coffea arabica known for its exceptional and distinctive flavor profile. It originated in Ethiopia but gained fame after its introduction to Panama. Geisha beans are characterized by their long, slender shape and complex, aromatic flavors often described as floral, tea-like, with notes of jasmine, bergamot, apricot, and peach.

Summary of production

Washed WDX

Cherries are picked every 15 days when they reach peak ripeness and are then left overnight in cherry. The coffee is de-pulped the next morning before undergoing a 36-40 hour dry ferment. It’s rinsed three to four times and then moved to raised beds, where the coffee is dried for 18 to 22 days under white mesh.
